Throughout my world travels I always made a point of including instrument makers as an integral part of my field studies. While in Yogyakarta I visited the family of Joan Suryanaga and Suhirjan, Gamelan makers. I later commissioned a Bronze Pelog Gamelan for the Canberra School of Music – ANU to add to the Slendro Gamelan on loan, creating the ability to offer Gamelan as part of the schools world music program. I mentored Gamelan at the ANU School of Music for until 2012. Below is a photo of a Gamelan workshop I presented to young people at the Groove Warehouse in 2020.
